HOW DO I JOIN ROTARY? And why should I?

If you are reading this, you probably have already met a Rotarian. Candidates are invited to join Rotary. The first step is to attend a meeting, so that you can ask questions not covered here, and meet the members. There is no meal charge at this first meeting, as you are our guest. If you wish to return to meet more Rotarians, you will be charged for your meal. If it appears to be a mutually satisfying experience your name would be submitted for membership by a Rotarian sponsor to the Board of Directors.  Upon review and approval, and with your approval, your name would be proposed for membership. Your name would be circulated, and with no objections, you would be invited to join The Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa.

WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED OF ME AS A ROTARIAN?

You would be expected to Attend a weekly Rotary meeting, support Club Service Projects, and learn about Rotary International’s history and work.  Share Rotary with family and friends.  Sponsoring other new Rotarians ensure continuity so that Rotary can continue its worldwide projects, such as the eradication of Polio, and the ongoing message of bringing a better life to the millions of children living in poverty around the world.

Rotarians believe in high ethical standards in life and business, as exemplified in Rotary’s Four-Way Test, which applies to the things that Rotarians think, say and do:

  • Is it the TRUTH?
  • Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

WHAT DOES IT COST TO BE A MEMBER OF NEWPORTBALBOA ROTARY?

There is a $100 initiation fee, and quarterly dues are currently $145.  The weekly dinner cost at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club is $15 for Newport-Balboa members, $20 for guests, about the same price you would pay for dinner at a local restaurant.  There are social events and special meetings such as the Christmas Party, where a special menu will raise the cost.  Members agree to be “fined” a fixed amount annually, presently $80, for recognition of milestones, such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Members are encouraged to attend District functions, for which there may be additional charges, and to support the work of The Rotary Foundation by becoming a Paul Harris Sustaining Member, for a minimum annual contribution of $100 (as a club we have committed to an average of $250 per member to the Rotary Foundation in the 2008-2009 Rotary year), and likewise to support the Club Foundation with an annual contribution of $100.

.

With Rotary membership, you can make a difference in our community through local projects, and to all the people of the world through international projects (both through fundraising and hands-on projects).

WHAT IS ROTARY?

Nearly two billion children in 122 countries have received oral polio vaccine and are successfully protected from poliomyelitis. Rotary International has partnered with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to eradicate polio globally.
